Jeannie's review of 'Expectations and Other Moving Pieces' by Chrometurtle

Everything I had done in my life seemed to lead up to this moment. The moment when I found myself bound inextricably to a man I didn't love, trapped in a life I didn't want. And if I left him, I would be entirely alone.
Twilight - Rated: M - English - Angst/Romance - Chapters: 39 - Words: 191,117 - Reviews: 11896 - Updated: 8-3-11 - Published: 10-13-09 - Bella & Edward

Hi all, it’s me. I know, I know, it’s been a long time baby but I’m back from my self-inflicted hiatus. I’ve been going through a reading dry spell lately and have found myself reflecting back on some of the things I’ve read in recent past that has inspired me to be a power reader in the first place. One of the reasons I love working at SYTYCW is that it’s a great forum for fic readers to cross over to being book readers, which is a category I proudly place myself in.

I know I don’t talk about fic a lot (or at all, really, anymore) but I used to read a lot of fic. Good fic, bad fic, sadly before I found recs, I  mostly read bad fic. (sidenote: there needs to be a bumper sticker that says, “Friends don’t let Friends read Bad Fics” I’d totally rock that on my mom mobile) But when I stumbled on a good fic (and later was rec’d other equally good fic) it was like nothing could stop me from tearing that story up. Sadly, I have found very few good fic and even fewer outstanding fic that I would consider top notch in my book. Most of those outstanding fics are ones you’ve heard of, “Wide Awake” by Angstgoddess003, “Clipped Wings & Inked Armour” by HunterHunting and “For the Summer” by Camoozle are some that come to mind when I think of outstanding fics I’ve read in my lifetime. There are a few, and I mean less than I can count on one hand, number of fics that are almost unknown and yet outstanding. These fics deserve attention, these fics deserve fanfare and accolade.

The one I’m thinking of? “Expectations and Other Moving Pieces” by chrometurtle. Now here’s a fic that started in 2009 and is still considered a WIP, though to its credit, it is now winding down and the author, instead of abandoning it, is committed to seeing the story to a rightful conclusion. When it started EaOMP updated almost every other day with a riveting, thought-provoking chapter every single time. To use a sports analogy (and I’m a baseball fan) this fic was hitting them out of the park with every update. Then there was a long stretch in there where she didn’t write a single chapter for months. But its recent quiet return has re-amassed a decent following and at almost 12,000 reviews, it’s not doing too shabby.

What can I say about this fic? Well, it’s one of THE MOST ORIGINAL ideas I’ve read in a fanfic story. The characters are 100% ooc in my opinion, they do not adhere at all to any of the character stereotypes that we know so well from the Twilight Fandom, other than their physical attributes (and even that is questionable since Edward is described as a scrawny nerd-like character). And that’s part of what makes this story great. The characters are not likeable at first blush, you actually hate Edward from the first chapter and are convinced their relationship is abusive and damaging to Bella. What you don’t know is how they got to where they are and what circumstances changed them into the shells of the people you see now. Thus begins the amazing and oftentimes tragic retelling of events that lead up to this point in their lives. Backstory is interwoven with frontstory and as the story moves forward, you begin to see the healing that so slowly, achingly at times, moves between them. It’s tragically beautiful and heartbreakingly good.

Chrometurtle writes this fic like she is writing the great American novel. With care and reverence for her characters and the story. Her writing melts...MELTS...off the screen into your lap as you read the words that spiral these characters into the abyss they’ve seemingly fallen into over their time together. At times, you find yourself reading and feeling like you’re reading poetry, both lyrical and haunting and freaking bloody good. I have convinced a non-Twi fan to read this story, someone who barely knows who Bella and Edward are and they were on the edge of their seat from chapter to chapter. The story captures you with it’s slow unfolding of events and even though you are anxious to find out more from chapter to chapter, you secretly wish the unveiling will continue on just so you can relish and bathe in the gorgeous writing style.

It’s good. It’s damn good. And I rarely say that about a fic. I’ve stuck with this fic in good times and bad, in times when it updated frequently to the times we didn’t see one for half a year. It’s still outstanding. It’s not sexy, it’s not even romantic. It’s a telling of human lives and emotions and relationships that could very well have been on any best seller bookshelf in any bookstore. Trust me and give it a go. I will be sad when it is over but I’ll be happy to know that I can shelve it (virtually, anyway) next to other such great reads as mentioned above and among other great published books. This story rises to the top of them all.

Happy Reading,
@gojeannie

Tanja's Interview with Liz Lemon Bennet about her fic 'She Gives Me Religion'

Hot-headed seminary student, Edward Masen meets just widowed bride Bella Swan. EPOV: AU/AH Started as O/S. Now expanded.
Twilight - Rated: M - English - Romance/Hurt/Comfort - Chapters: 25 - Words: 185,559 - Reviews: 2316 - Updated: 7-26-11 - Published: 11-29-10 - Edward & Bella

There are always a lot of oneshot contest going on in the Twilight fandom and sometimes I make a habit out of reading the contest entries. There were, for example, The Monster-In-Law contest, the Best Domination Ever contest, the Beautiful Bellies contest, the Boys on Boards contest, or the Cherry Exchange contest where the first chapter of She Gives Me Religion was first posted as a oneshot. And while I can't remember if I first read this story during the Cherry Exchange Contest oneshots or if someone on Twitter talked about it I know I was hocked from the first chapter.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

She Gives Me Religion is told entirely in Edward POV which might be a change for some. It starts out with Edward, a seminary student, driving to the ER to support his mentor in the family room, or grief room, after a limousin of a wedding party crashed on the way to the reception. One person, the groom, died.

This is where Edward meets Bella, the bride, whose world literally just crashed.

What follows is the emotional story of two people trying to deal with huge changes in their lives while also building a partnership that basically started when both were in a fragile state of mind. Bella, newly widowed after barely being married and not having the best relationship with her in-laws. Edward, not longer sure if the seminary is really what he is supposed to do.

Here's an excerpt for you:
I'm on my knees before Edward Masen, The Beautiful and Kind—that should be his title. He's nude, and really hard. Huh, I never knew an erection could be so beautiful. It's a sculpture you'd find in a fine museum. I stroke one finger down the shaft. It's cold, hard—he is a statue. Am I really here? Where am I? Maybe I'm dreaming.
Intrigued? You know the deal. Read the story, leave the author some love and come back to tell us if you liked it or not.

Sue's Interview with Melolabel about her fic 'Come Back to Me'

When the fire of newlywed love cools and the demands of life take over, how can Bella&Edward rise above the storm and resist drifting apart? With their marriage crumbling, what kind of wake up call will it take to get back to their HEA? AU/AH B/ETwilight - Rated: T - English - Hurt/Comfort/Romance - Chapters: 15 - Words: 72,572 - Reviews: 496 - Updated: 3-10-11 - Published: 9-13-10 - Edward & Bella

Alrighty lets talk marriage.

I know there are some fics out there where there is the HEA that ends in a big white wedding or a wedding on the beach or a runaway to Vegas style. Get married by big fat fake Elvis and we ride off into the sunset shitting out daisies and rainbows.

Rarely does fic tackle marriage. I can honestly off the top of my head think of ONLY 3 fics (this one included) set in present time that deal with reality in marriage.

In fic usually the problem in the marriage ends up leading one partner or another to cheat. And then they find their true love and we are back to unicorns having bowel issues with wild flowers!

But lets face it married ladies out there:
cheating is not the biggest problem in married life. Much like it takes little things to show love it takes little things to kill it too .

Little things like not paying attention when the other person is talking. Little things like not seeing the other persons pain because you are too busy or too hurt yourself. THAT is what this fic is about.

These two were High School sweethearts. Been together for years, best friends. He is now a resident while she works at a job she hates to support him. Oh he has access to money but his pride will not allow him to ask for that help from his parents EVEN though he is on good terms with them.

We find two people who are struggling with things like little money, little time and after a while we find they do not know each other as well as they had thought. Suddenly Bella has had enough and she needs to get away so she takes her small inheritance from her grandmother and tells him she is leaving to go find herself.

NOW SUE and Dr. Phil would agree here (SUE btw is way smarter than Dr. Phil even though SUE has less letters after her name and SUE is also much more charming!)  Running away does NOT help your problem. The problem is still gonna BE there when you come home.

HOWEVER the neat thing is she wants to give them each some distance to get some perspective on things and gaining perspective is important in life. Sometimes you just need to know what really matters and what is unimportant.

Edward has ALWAYS had someone doing things for him SO what happens when Edward is left to take care of EVERYTHING without Bella? What is the condition of their apartment? What about their finances? (Bella deals with those too) How does he eat? HOw does Bella fair without him? What about Edwards jealousy issues? you KNOW he has them!

Sue's interview with Stupidsuckedinreader about her fic

After college, Edward Cullenman and Bella Swanstein must work on their relationship. Sometimes getting to forever can be a bit meshugana. M for lemons and K for Certified Kosher.

Ahhhhh Kosherward.....
Many of you who know me, know that the series of 4 o/s of The Eight Nights of Delights is my go to make-me-giggle fic, especially chapter 2 from HIS POV.

I met this author because I fell in love with her username. Really who could not love the name Stupidsuckedinreader?

Ever since reading Eight Nights of Delights I have been gently badgering her to give me more Kosherward. I love him deeply because he has to have the most honest, open, beautiful, naughty, real male POV I have ever read.

This fic is full of of some stereotypes. She plays them up, especially the Jewish mother who oddly enough reminds me a great deal of my Catholic Grandma with her advice and nosiness. It also has the two great lovers grown up and grown apart -  not due to anything huge an agnsty but because of silly misunderstandings.

He wanted to set them up for life. Get married, have babies - that was his life plan. She wanted to be independent, still dating him but not being expected to get married and being a Jewish baby factory with his name as her only identity.
They split up.

This is the story of how they get back together and live with the various expectations put upon them by friends and family.

What I like most about this story is that the characters really come to life for me. The banter, the way they deal with things, are very real and not over the top and dramatized.

Everyone can identify with them and the pressures they get from all sides
and lets face it, Zayin is a funny side character with a mind all his own.

Tanja's Interview with Lillybellis about We Come To Life Beneath The Stars

As Bella Swan starts over with hopes of finding her future, Edward Cullen is hanging on desperately to his past. She's treading water, and he's a corporate golden boy. They share an office, but few words...until one night changes everything.
Twilight - Rated: M - English - Romance/Drama - Chapters: 13 - Words: 119,551 - Reviews: 2312 - Updated: 12-8-10 - Published: 6-16-10 - Bella & Edward

Everyone probably has people they completely trust with fic recs to the degree that they don't even question what this story is about. They just start reading, knowing that they'll most likely love the story when this person does. This is how I came to find We Come To Life Beneath The Stars.

At a time where I wasn't really reading any new Twifics someone tweeted the link to it and I bookmarked it to read later (read: when I felt like reading fics again) without question. And let me tell you, once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I read all available chapters (13 then) in one day.

The story is about Bella who's basically starting over her life in her mid-twenties. She quits the job she got through some favors her aunt called in
and starts working as Executive Assistant. She also breaks up with her boyfriend of 6 years whom she fell out of love with. Both decisions her mother can't understand.

At the new job she meets Edward Cullen, who is sitting at the desk across from her and seemingly hates her. Soon things between them get interesting.

To learn more about the mystery that is Edward Cullen read the story and the interview with Lillybellis.

Tanja's Interview with miztrezboo about her story 'Subway Strangers'

"Every day, my eyes search for him. A quick glimpse on a subway platform until I see him at night, in my dreams..."
A love story between two strangers in search for something more. For Hmonster. AH

Let me just state at the beginning that this is a not an Edward/Bella fic. Sure, they ARE mentioned but this story is about Rosalie and Emmet. And while I usally don't read fics where Edward and Bella aren't the main pairing, this one is just too good to pass. It's all about feeling.

Anyway, lets start with what this fic is all about.

Everyone of you, that has to take the train daily, no matter if to work or school, probably found themself watching the people standing around on the platform, waiting. There are the school kids. The teenage girls chatting. The businessmen reading the paper or checking their emails. And people just standing around bored

Rosalie is one of those persons watching other people on the platform while she's waiting for the train to take her home from work. This is where she sees Emmet, her Subway Stranger, for the first time. Standing on the other platform. She's been watching him for months, not brave enough to go over and talk to him.

Me? I watch. I stalk my Subway Stranger and every night he plays out my fantasies of a career that doesn't involve the ties he seems to hate so much. Every night I live with the thoughts of what it could be like if I was brave enough, willing enough to have any sort of courage to walk over and introduce myself.

Everyday I see him, and in those few minutes before our trains arrive, taking us in opposite directions, I like to believe that he might be interested in me, too.
This story is about grown-ups, with grown-up jobs and grown-up problems. It's about certain things being different than they seemed to be. Rosalie is not the overly confident, maneating, woman. And Emmet? Behind the suit and tie hides a guy playing acoustic guitar at karaoke night.

Lets see what Boo has to tell you about Subway Strangers.

Sue's interview with TXBirdie about her fic Tangled up in Blue

Edward Cullen is looking for inspiration to write THE American novel. Bella Swan is looking for inspiration, any inspiration, to pull her from her doldrums existence. But what they find in each other, neither of them could have expected.

You know what I have nothing witty to say this morning. The kids are screaming and arguing over whether or not 5yr old Nik does indeed have Jammie socks.
I have long ago given up the illusion of being able to say that I truly understand my kids.
Now where was I cause I got interuptted by the kids again asking about socks ...just a minute EMOTEEN 1 needs some redirection..

The point? When your a mom writing is anything but easy even the nonsense I put up here.

This story is about Bella who always wanted to be an author, well real life got in her way. Kids, a husband ,cleaning gum out of the carpet, trying to determine that mystery stain in the carpet and not really wanting to know the answer ...

She gets a chance to do something different. For one week a year she goes on a writers retreat.

Just reading that I started singing heaven ..I'm in heaven.. and my heart beats so that I can hardly ... BOYS!! STOP IT! MOMMY IS BUSY!

sorry

Through the course of these retreats we get to know Bella and oddly enough Edward is another writer and he is at the retreat.

THAT'S right Bella and Edward are NOT married in this fic
She is married to Jake
He is engaged to someone else
This story goes on the thought that Bella and Edward are the soul mates we like to think of them as so  what would have happened if fate made them not meet in high school? Does that connection still exist even though they are devoted to others ? If so what do they do about it?

OK the author and I talked for HOURS (not that that is anything new I am a talker!) we had so much fun ! wish you all could have been there
OK lets learn more about her and her fic in the interview I sure hope it makes sense we got a little goofy and my kids kept interrupting as always SO you know what to do. Read the interview, look at the sexy cuddle pics - some of which may be NSFW, I am going for sensual here - and then leave some love

Sue's Interview with LadyGwynedd, Author of The Exchange Student

I am VERY nervous writing this, for a couple of reasons

  1. We all know how horrible my grammar and spelling and all around writing is.
  2. This author, well, I like her AU human stories, I really do. And I wanna impress her because, well, she writes another fic I love, and I wanna interview her again.
  3. She teaches High School! Eekk! I would like to think that I am smart, but my writing does not show my intelligence, so I think impressing her in this way is not going to happen! LOL

What do I like about this fic?

Well lets see...

  • An Edward with an accent
  • A blue collar Bella
  • An evilish MIL
  • And an all around sweet fic about falling in love
The Exchange Student by LadyGwynedd

Summary: He's simply an exchange student looking for a decent cup of tea and Bella provides it. She thinks he's completely perfect. When he finds himself in a jam, she offers to help him out; however, they are both soon way over their heads. Will true love prevail?

Exchange student reminds me a bit of the movie, The Green Card, but not enough to call it a cross over. A young pair of friends decide to get married so he can stay in the states.

This talks not just about the lengths they go to to prove that they are legitimately married, but also the process that Bella goes through discovering that this great guy actually loves her.

My favorite part would have to be their first fight, as a married couple. Before that, they are so polite to each other, like new roommates, but a fight over something simple like how to prepare a certain dish for dinner.

*giggle* Ahh, the joys of being married...

Sue's interview with Stella luna sky author of Bad Fauxmance

My most sincere apologies for keeping you all on tender hooks for *GASP* 3 days of no posts!

Lets just say Real Life is kicking my ass again, so the editing and actual writing of posts is not a top priority. I am doing my best to get some done, so we can have a whole bunch of them set and schedules to go up and I am getting there! (Go Sue! Go Sue! Yeah!)

Please forgive me for any faux pas in this post, now let's sit back and enjoy this funny interview with a lovely author, about her fic, Bad Fauxmance.

Summary: Typical formula: boy meets girl. Boy befriends girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl has no idea. Boy is afraid to tell her, because Boy - me, Edward Cullen - has been pretending to be gay to keep Girl's man-hating self in his life. Rated M. AH.

Oh my, what mess has Eddie gotten himself into this time?

The premise of this fic is why I just had to read it, and lucky for me, the author is doing a great job with it as well!

Edward is a bit of a player. He meets Bella, who is an all-round manhater, so in a stroke of 'brilliance', he decides to pretend to be gay to get close to her.

This fic cracks me up. You have a straight man, who loves the boobs, trying to act like they are yuckie!

His internal thoughts are worth the read alone!

How will Edward go from womanizer to sensitive guy? You see, at first, all he is looking for is a good time.

What will happen when Bella finds out? Because you KNOW she will! WHY does Bella hate men? Will Edward really change? And more importantly... a gay Emmett? Yes, he is gay and yes, this fic pulls it off, without it being cheesy or stereotypical.

WHY I like the gay men in this fic, is because they are more... real. They are not the cliched stereotype (THANK YOU). Not all gay men are flamers, and NOT all flamers are gay!

NOW, enough of my early morning nonsensical rambles, let's get to the interview.

Read it you'll love it and leave her some loving!

AHHH, so what can I say? Ummm... hmmm...

Ok, you know I like to feature fav authors here, on the blog, and I do my best to give my readers a mix of the "big" authors and the lesser known ones.

SO today my treat for you is this:

TaraSueMe agreed to give Molls and me an interview. Molls has a SERIOUS love of all things from the Domward Trilogy!
And me? Well. you know me! LOL
This interview was done before the flood that devastated Nashville, which, BTW, is Molls' home
Molls would have liked to have done the write up about this story, but over the last few weeks she has been busy, not only cleaning up her own home, but helping out her neighbors and town. So I get stuck doing an inadequate job so to Molls, ILY, and to Taram I wish I could do better. I know Molls would have done something spectacularm but I will give it the old College try!

Sue's Interview with QuestionXisting for Ashen Skies: A Tainted Genocide

Ashen Skies: A Tainted Genocide by QuestionXisting

As you all know I have a thing for historical fics things set in another time.
I started reading this fic because of the description:

Summary: Edward a confused militant is trying to survive in a world where the systematic killing of people based upon qualities like race, sex, & income have been sanctioned by law. In the midst of death, hate & ignorance, he will discover love can still be found.

Sandy's Interview with Babette12 about 'Master Race'

Some people like milk chocolate, some like dark. Me? I like both. It’s the same with Edward Cullen. I can take the gorgeous and restrained Edward who ‘goes off like a packet of crackers in the sack’ sort of Edward, and then there’s what we’ve all come to know and love as DARKWARD.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you MASTER RACE, by Babette12.

Summary: Alienated from the Cullens, Edward finds himself bored in South America. When he "hears" another vampire creating a master race he is intrigued. But who would be the perfect genetic material and what will be the cost to the human mother?

And yes, if you read that and thought “ohhhhh Bastard!”, you’d be absolutely right. Having said that, Babette12 created a Darkward that sets out with one agenda and discovered that not everything goes according to plan …

Rae's Interview with TalulaBlue about 'With Teeth'

With Teeth by TalulaBlue

Summary: Edward is a 27-year-old alcoholic/addict struggling with his recovery. Bella is a 23-year-old who's moved back home after college. This fic chronicles how they meet, fall in love, and struggle with the complexities of their relationship. Not nearly as maudlin as it sounds (I hope). Rated NC-17 for graphic (and sometimes non-romantic) sex, drug and alcohol use and abuse, profane language, and brief (very brief) suicidal ideation (although NO suicide attempts). No sexual assault, no cutting.

God – where do I even start with this review? This story is probably one of my top five fics of all time and it’s so hard for me to put into words why it’s so awesome. I swear, I’m rendered completely speechless after each and every chapter.

As the summary states, Edward is an alcoholic struggling with his recovery and Bella is sweet and adorable and such an easy character to identify with because she’s just so fucking real. In fact, the whole story is so damn realistic I feel like I’m watching someone’s life unfold. Everything about it – the conversations, the mannerisms, the emotions, the smut (oh god… the smut… I’m dying just thinking about it…). Everything is just fucking perfect. In the first chapter we get a glimpse of Edward’s life as an addict – a series of drunken and drug induced interactions with people he doesn’t know and doesn’t give two shits about. Months pass and he’s finally fed up with his mundane lifestyle and he checks himself into a treatment facility.
I am rarely sober.  I drink and pass out.  Wake up and snort something, take some pills, drink.  I pass out again, wake up and smoke something.  Snort something.  Drink.  Vomit.  Try to piss in the toilet and piss on myself instead.  I drink whatever is offered me.  I smoke or snort or swallow anything I can get my hands on.  One night it’s vodka and coke and E at some rich girl’s parent’s house; the next I’m in the passenger seat of a Toyota Corolla, snorting some teenaged kid’s Adderall.
We then get a glance into Bella’s life and what kind of character she is. She’s just like any other 23-year-old girl trying to figure out who she is and what she wants out of life. Again, I think this is what makes her so relatable. You can so easily identify with her and you can just put yourself into her shoes.

A few chapters in Bella and Edward meet and they slowly start to form a relationship, one where from practically the moment they start it you can tell it’s going to be a slippery slope and full of ups and downs. We’re getting an incredibly realistic look into what it must be like for recovering addicts to try and build a relationship. Their relationship is incredibly complex and is an addiction within itself. A friend sent me a quote the other day; one that I think represents With Teeth incredibly well:
“What I want is to be needed. What I need is to be indispensible to somebody. Who I need is someone who will eat up all my free time, my ego, my attention. Someone addicted to me. A mutual addiction.” – Chuck Palahniuk
With Teeth is incredibly complex and multifaceted, so much so that I’ve spent hours on Skype having discussions with some of my girls from Twitter. With each chapter, something new is brought forth that make us question the characters actions and emotions. Information that had been provided previously is brought into a new and different light. This is what is so fabulous about this story. The discussion it brings forth and the mystery we are unraveling about the characters just brings us closer to them. I literally feel everything the characters are feeling in the chapters and I’m almost haunted it by them.

So, GO. Read it. Now. You wont be disappointed, trust me on this. I know this review hasn’t done With Teeth or TalulaBlue a lick of justice, but just trust. It’s so much more than words can describe.  Go on, find out for yourself.
