Undiscovered Gems

This (usually weekly) feature is a way for authors to pimp out their stories. We, the staff of SYTYCW, probably has not read the story - yet. So convince us why we should read it.

Amor Vincit Omnia by TheDarkSparkles

Empty. Complacent. Content with living in a void, Bella exists. Living day to day hiding in mundane routine and not coloring outside the lines. What will she do when her choices are no longer black and white.. will she turn to the grey area in between?
Twilight - Rated: M - English - Romance/Angst - Chapters: 9 - Words: 44,056 - Reviews: 14 - Updated: 9-18-11 - Published: 9-6-11 - Bella & Edward

Hello!

I'm very happy to see that you will be adding up and coming stories to your site.

I have been reading fanfic for a few years now. I'd taken a break over the summer for family time. When my boys returned to school I set off in search of some good reads. Even though there are tens of thousands of stories to be read, I'm bored with the same characters doing the same things and the unique reads are harder to find. I don't read unfinished stories. I have found that most authors update far less frequently than I do, sometimes up to several weeks for one chapter. That drives me nuts as a reader.

I decided to write my own story. I have not written anything since college so I's extremely proud of what I have accomplished so far. Getting my story the exposure it needs, has proven difficult since most of the sites I belong to I have used only to find new reading material. I'd rather be sucking up another story than discussing the last one I read; always thirsting for more.

I am currently publishing a chapter around every two days. I have a rough outline of 60 chapters but the more I write the more I am having to split chapters. This story will take place in Canada, the United States and Africa. It also has explicit content and is appropriately rated M. I do not have a banner but may be adding one. Design is NOT my thing. Be forewarned, this is a story of Edward and Bella. Everyone else is expendable.

Amor Vincit Omnia is a story of forbidden love.

Edward is a vampire and has been drawn to Bella since he first came in contact with her as a preteen in a near-accident in Canada. Bella lives in Washington and is oblivious to the attention she receives from Edward.  Edward's stalker-ish relationship with Bella becomes more when Bella's child hood ex-best friend, Jacob, closes in on territory Edward considers his.

To stay together they risk losing everything, including the loyalty and lives of the people who brought them together.

Amor Vincit Omnia, Love Conquers All.

I am inspired by the man who loves me and by my sons who give my life meaning. The story comes from my heart and there are references that parallel some of my own life experiences.

The best thing about my story is it is mine. Not to sound egotistical or conceited, this story holds a lot of meaning for me. An affirmation that there is a fire inside me that is very much alive. Even though I'm getting older (EEK!) I can live forever young through imagination.

I hope you enjoy what you see. If you have any questions please feel to ask.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration~

The Morphing Games by orrington.rose

Twenty-four names drawn from twenty four steel boxes, from twelve districts of America, all ruled by the vicious vampires, the Volturi. Of those twenty four names by the end all but one will be engraved on headstones. The one that's not, the one that survives, receives the ultimate prize: immortality. My name is Bella Swan, and I’m a Prospective in the 100th Morphing Games. There’s only one problem: I don’t want to win.

Why should I (the reader) read your story?
Violence is compelling, tragedy more so. My story has both in spades. But I think what makes The Morphing Game special is it examines not only the problem of how to survive  when everyone wants to kill you, but the question if it's possible to kill and still retain your humanity. Even if you haven't read the Hunger Games, The Morphing games is accessible, because it's set in a new, fully realized dystopian world run by the Volturi, where humans must give blood weekly to vampires, where everyone's informing upon each other, where the poor struggle to get by and the rich are indoctrinated to a world of violence in order to prepare for the Morphing Games, where adolescents are selected to compete in a fight to the death in order to earn the privilege of being turned into vampires.  Bella feels the full repercussions of her upbringing, her history of violence, in compelling, disturbing ways that I don't think have been addressed in either Hunger Games fiction or Twilight fiction. This isn't just some bad-ass Bella who has shadowy dark past of pain, Bella has committed real crimes, crimes against people she loved, before she even enters the Morphing Games. And of course there is Edward, her mentor, who only has one goal: keep Bella alive. Unfortunately, keeping her alive means teaching her how to suppress her compassion, the very thing that he needs to nurture if he wants there to be a relationship between them.

Also, the fic has just started so if you jump on now you'll be able to enjoy the ride all the way through. I have a good chunk of it pre-written, so worrying about completion or updates isn't an issue. It's just a matter of putting it through the beta process.

Where did you get inspiration?
Obviously, I was inspired by the Hunger Games. But I also spent some time in Berlin this summer studying about the Cold War and the Soviet Union (the original dystopia!). I talked with a lot of people who had lived under Soviet Russia, and a few who had been in the Stassi prison. One girl I talked to had lost her grandmother in a very similar way that Bella loses her mother. So even though this story is fantasy, there are real people, real tragedies here.

What do you think is the BEST thing about your fic?
I think I really tie together the Hunger Games and Twilight in compelling ways. For example, the fact that the winner of the Morphing Games becomes a vampire, actually gives a reason for the games to exist, and for people to want to volunteer. There are little details like that spread throughout the story. I feel as if I give interesting spins on all parts of both universes, while still weaving them together in a coherent whole that could stand on it's own.

Undiscovered Gems

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been a while since we last had an Undiscovered Gems for you. So I won't keep you waiting.
Summary: Her life was uneventful until she met a stunning, mysterious,obsessive man with a monstrous hidden past. What happens when the pastcatches up with him and throws them both into the unknown? Rated M
Why should I (the reader) read your story?
I honestly believe that you will not have read anything else like it
on fanfiction. Hopefully that will be a good thing. What starts out as
a seemingly simple story between Edward and Bella suddenly turns into
a story of mystery, intregue, passion and danger, with all sorts beenthrown at our favourite couple.
Where did you get inspiration?
The story was a few chapters in and I had read it posted under a
different author. She gave the story to me and I rewrote the first
four chapters, using her start for the story and combining it and
twisting it to fit with what I had planned. I had always fancied
writing a vampire story and this was the perfect springboard for me to
pick up and turn into my own little fruitcake. The story has been
inspired by a lot of the vamp cultures out there at the moment, The
Vampire Diaries and True Blood both have some sort of influence in
this story - it's not strictly true to Twilight at all (a fact that a
few people have struggled with)
What do you think is the BEST thing about your fic?
The fantasy world of mystery that it creates! I set out to try and
write a complete make believe world, that introduced and dealt with
new creatures as well as new characters. There are Aswangs, dhampires,
and Vamarests all intertwined into the story. I have been told that
each chapter makes you want to keep reading - that the story in itself
becomes an addiction. I think the way my imagination has played with
the whole plot of this story is a major strength, hopefully the
readers can see how everythign is woven into my crazy world right from
the first chapter.
Undiscovered Gems
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary: During the Night of Tears, in an attempt to be selfless and haunted by doubts, Edward decides to leave once more. Will Bella crumble or go after him? Will they be able to resurrect a once in a lifetime love? AU, Post Eclipse.

Why should you read this?
Were you left wanting after Eclipse? Were you ticked off at the treatment Edward received at the hands of Bella? Were you outraged about the kiss? Perhaps you felt that the original was severely lacking in explanation as to Bella's behavior and her continued coddling of Jacob? Maybe you thought that the young mutt was way out of line with his manipulations of Bella and the guilt he used to keep her tied to him? Perhaps you thought that Bella's behavior was callous and uncaring? What kind of person haggles for sex during a proposal? What kind of person kisses her fiance's worst enemy hours after getting engaged?

My story explores a what-if scenario that came out of my distaste for Eclipse. I'm Team Edward. The treatment he received in book 3 made my skin crawl. I felt his pain. I hurt when he did, especially in those situations where his love for Bella superceded all common sense. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered at what point a human man would have thrown up his hands and said "to hell with this". Edward isn't afforded that option in the canon story, because he has no choice but to love Bella. SM gave him no out, no matter how badly he was treated. And in a coup de grace, after receiving the heinous treatment all throughout Eclipse, his enemy gets to imprint on his newborn child.

The story begins with 8 chapters in the first arc, with the POV switching between Bella and Edward between chapters. While Bella cries over Jacob, Edward comes to the conclusion that she is in pain because she has to give up the friendship with the dog. From there, his thoughts go off on a tangent - what if Bella is crying because she would rather be with Jacob, but is honoring her promise to Edward out of a sense of responsibility? As he thinks more about her recent behavior, the 'contract' of their engagement, the night in the tent, he comes to the conclusion that the message is "Edward, I choose you but it's killing me." Out of love and with renewed doubt whether Bella truly loves him, Edward decides to give her up, thinking that is what she really wants. He's angry, hurt and in so much pain after the last few months that he is not thinking clearly. He leaves town against the advice of his family and chooses not to confront Bella with his doubts and thoughts.

Bella wakes up that morning to a note that Edward has left town. From there, the first arc takes them both on a separate journey of self-realization that ends in Chapter 8 and is fairly angsty. The 2nd arc begins in chapter 9 where they finally begin to have open, honest conversations, explore their intimacy and lay themselves bare before the other. Bella gets the chance to address her fears and her reasons for why she treated Edward the way he did, and Edward gets to show Bella what he's really feeling inside.

This is a WIP. Currently, 13 chapters are posted on FFn with another 10 or so planned.

Where did I get my inspiration:
Credit for the 'what-if' that spawned the story must go to KzintiKiller whom I met on AdultTwilightFans.com, a site that is dedicated to those of us beyond our teenage years. Part of my inspirations also came from my other WIP, Transcendence, which is a retelling of Eclipse in EPOV. Writing those chapters, expanding on Edward's thoughts and emotions, I became more and more enraged at Bella and Jacob, and needed to get that off my chest. Resurrection formed in my mind as a means to an end - to right the wrongs in Eclipse.

What do I think is the BEST thing about my fic:
It gives a voice to Edward and Bella both, allowing them to have open and honest conversations that address the issues in their relationship, thus leading to a new maturity and intimacy. They go from hiding their emotions and thoughts to openly discussing the issues and finding mature and realistic compromises, thus gaining a better understanding of each other and themselves.

I hope you'll consider me for your blog. Please let me know if you need additional information. I appreciate this opportunity.
