Sue's interview with Quantumfizzx about her fic 'Book of Misremembrances'

A painful present leads Hermione to seek refuge as a Hogwarts professor...only to learn the past is more uncertain than her future. Cedric/Hermione
Harry Potter - Rated: M - English - Romance/Adventure - Chapters: 6 - Words: 11,097 - Reviews: 179 - Updated: 7-14-11 - Published: 7-6-11 - Hermione G. & Cedric D.

Ever since I read Finding Himself by minnissinoo I have been looking around for another Cedric/Hermione story that would captivate me just as much. The hard thing is, once you have read what I consider to be the best fic ever, you are gonna have a hard time finding something that can compare (yes, I know T and I disagree. She keeps trying to get me to read SLASH but it scares me. And T still has no desire to read CD/HG fic

Like the way I find most fic I was sitting on Twitter one night (I get all my news from Twitter) when one of my friends happened to mention that she is a beta for a new fic about Cedric and Hermione.

OHH is it any good?

Yes, it's good. I tend to take this with a grain of salt because, after all, one persons good is another persons flounce but I'm up for anything.

THEN I heard who the author was. Anyone remember The Plan? You know, that brilliant idea QF had, to post a story in real time? Remember the fun of the updates? The little vingnettes we got? Yeah, I do too. It was a blast for the reader and I bet a nightmare for the author and her Beta.

At any rate, I was all excited because I wanted to see if she had come up with an idea I could sink my teeth into. So happy I gave this one a chance!

LOVE this avi
The idea behind it is, that the world Hermione is living in is basically the one she was left in at the end of Book 7. The war is over, they have seen devastation, heartbreak and death. Minerva asks Hermione to come join her. She has something for her from Dumbledore. It's a book and it seems empty? Weird. Follow Hermione as she finds out the secrets behind this book.

How cool is that? We get to discover things as Hermione does. We find out the truth. SO how does Cedric come into this?

Well, you will get to meet a sweet teenage boy. He is cute, he is flirty and written as an adorable match for our heroine. SO if you like reading Cedric/Hermione and you were left wanting more of this pairing, give this one a shot. I think, like the few of us that are reading it, you will NOT be disappointed.

Remember what to do. Read what is there, leave some comments to our lovely author and then come back and tell me if you like this!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What was it that gave you the 'spark' for your story? Was it a picture? A moment or event? Can you remember the initial inspiration?
It was a two-fold process really. My intro to all fanfic was minisinoo’s “Finding Himself.” (For those who have not read this amazing story, it is a Cedric/Hermione fic.) So, for a long time, I’ve had the experience of reading someone who showed that Cedric and Hermione could make a great couple.
When I read the HP novels and saw “The Goblet of Fire” I really was always struck by the idea that Cedric would have been a great ally, had he lived. I do see why Rowling killed him though; he’s Harry’s competition in many ways. He’s the golden boy who Harry could easily have been had the decision been made not to place him with his muggle relatives.
For this particular idea - that the truth is in an enchanted book that was made as insurance policy by Dumbledore because he had the foresight to think that Hermione might be the target of evil in retribution for all trouble she causes them – was just a logical moment.
We all read in a book (or saw in a film) that Cedric died in the maze and that he and Hermione barely ever interacted. If a book makes that true, then a book could make it un-true. It would have to be one heckuva special book. Hence, the book is painstakingly handmade and hidden away. One has to appreciate that Dumbledore crafted it himself and was uncertain if it would ever even be needed.
To alter mass memories would be a huge undertaking. It would need to be labor-intensive to protect and to correct.
Do you have a particular process when it comes to your writing, perhaps a certain mood, environment or music? Do you have any 'triggers' to get you in the writing mood?
It varies from fic to fic for me. For example, I wrote the majority of “The Plan” during my Con Law 2 class lectures... as my grade can attest.
In general, I put on headphones and listen to Pandora radio (classic rock, mostly) and guzzle caffeine. I pound out a section. Then, I go back and re-read a huge chuck if not all of the entire story and tinker. It ends up taking forever, but that seems to be what I do.
Then, I go back to what I wrote for the first time that night and tack on stuff.
A day or more later, I’ll go back and add in more detail. For some reason, that break in between initially writing it and coming back to it helps me see points that would benefit from more work. That’s also the point where I go in and do things that make me feel better about what I’ve written. Silly things that probably no one notices like writing that “his words flowed” when the speaker is talking about water. Also, making the physical tension aspects of an encounter a bit more intense.
Give us an elevator pitch. Say you're in an elevator with a prospective
reader for 2 minutes – what would you tell them about the story?
“You know how everyone’s always saying Hermione is the brightest witch of
her age? Wouldn’t she be great coupled with a wizard who was better than anyone else in Hogwarts, even students an entire year ahead of him in studies?
I think Hermione is the Samwise Gamgee of the Potter universe. Yes, Harry carries the burden, but she definitely carries him. Let’s reward her. Let’s give her the most beautiful guy on the planet.
Ron? Ron who?”
(Seriously, I think Ron is a great character. I just think the way he and Hermione bicker is toxic. I know Rowling shows them together years later, but I can’t imagine that their love would actual not be turbulent. I never bought them as a viable couple… but the job Rupert Grint did in DH1 made me take Ron seriously for the first time. Anybody who can pull off that dialog about a tiny ball of light floating into his chest… well, I tip my hat to him.)
Do you picture particular actors for your characters, or are they someone else entirely? If so, who?
I am, most assuredly, picturing the actors cast in the Potter movies as the characters in my story.
That is not always the case with my Twifics. I don’t want to say who was or wasn’t in particular fics I’ve written because I’ve seen fans get really territorial about that sort of thing.
I can say that in a fic I have partially complete about Edward as a knight returning from the 9th crusade, that Edward is model Nick Ayler in my mind.
Is the story all planned out or do you do it as a fly by the seat of your pants thing?
It is completely planned out.
I’m unweaving (jacking with, you might say) one of the most complex plots in history. I HAD to outline it. Still, I continue to have moments as I write that it occurs to me I’ve overlooked some detail and will have to smash it in there. For example, it just occurred to me that I will need to find an alternate way for Moody to be rescued after Couch, Jr is discovered to be an imposter.
Such is not the case with other fics I’ve written. I knew how those ended and then I just had to get the characters there.
Do you have a Beta and would you like to give him/her a shoutout here?
Oh, heck yeah, I have a beta. Heatherbella
She is amazing. Even before she bravely signed on to beta “The Plan” we were good Facebook friends. She remarked, rightly so, that we have a shared brain.
The pace for BoM is less intense than the guerilla beta-ing she did around Christmas. People always comment on how difficult it must have been for me to post in real-time. Well, Heatherbella did all the beta work while working full-time and on a 6-hour time difference.
I need to erect a statue in her honor.
Have you got any other projects going on? Any planned for the future?
I have 4 Twi-fics in process. I may convert one to an original fiction instead.
I need some focus and to knuckle-down and finish them – but I am a slave to the siren call of plot bunnies.
What was it that brought you to fanfic?  What is it that has kept you here (besides your own writing)
 I needed something to hang onto that was “me” during the first semester of law school. I can’t really explain it, but I felt myself slipping away.
I’d just left behind my English dept. and my thesis work on Potter. There was a huge void. So, I did what would’ve been considered blasphemy at my old university and sought out fanfiction. I think I googled “good Potter fanfiction” (Probably with an M rating – in for a penny, in for a pound) and was about to agree that fanfiction was all crap after opening a few. Then, fate put “Finding Himself” in my lap.
It was a small step from there to Twilight fanfic. I went there out of frustration over fade-to-black. Read an AU honeymoon of which I’ve, regrettably, lost track. Then “Wide Awake” (like pretty much everyone else) and then “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”
Hooked.
Do you have a background in writing?
Yes, I have a degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing. My focus was poetry, but we all took an equal amount of fiction classes. I wrote several short stories in college, some of which might not be utter crap.
I’ve always written. There is this obscure movie starring Jo Beth Williams called “American Dreamer” about an author that ends up thinking she is her heroine. Something about that movie made me think I wanted to write. So, I started writing and haven’t stopped.
How about your creative self-confidence? By nature writers tend to be a notoriously insecure lot so how are you finding the online writing experience?
Insecure, hell yeah. It’s been a rollercoaster for me, really.
My first fic, The Blessing Ring, was such a labor. I really poured my heart into it, and almost no one read it. I remember daily thinking I should just pull the stupid thing and move on. The benefit of that fic, however, is that I made some amazing and true friends.
The lemon thing was hard for me to overcome. Then, I remembered that one of my fiction professors read her first published piece to us – from an old edition of “Playgirl.” Point being, there is no shame in erotica.
My professor, Karen Stolz, went on after that to earn a multi-book publishing deal. I should mention that she passed a few weeks ago. If anyone has a chance to read her books, do yourself a favor and do so. Americana, quaint and beautiful.
Do you tell your friends and family that you're an online author with a devoted following, or is this something that you tend to keep for yourself?
My immediate family knows as well as my mother and sister. My closest RL friends know and a few current classmates. The subject tends to come up when huge pictures of Rob pop up on my Facebook feed during class.
Actually, I overheard one of my classmates talking about “The Plan” and couldn’t believe it. Surreal.
Some of my former English dept colleagues know as well. I actually turned in my one-shot “Quoting Frost” for retro course credit.
So, I’ve been fortunate that people have been accepting. If they are mocking me, it’s not to my face.
One drawback of my forthrightness with my family: my eldest son (then 19) read “The Plan.” He didn’t tell me until he was done. Awkward doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Is there a particular character in your story that you identify with the most?
I’d love to think I identify with Hermione. I could aspire to emulate her.
I’m trying to write her as true to Rowling’s characterization as possible, but dealing with emotions and perspectives that are different and new.
I don’t care how capable and confident one is, the first smatterings of love in youth are bound to cause some stumbles and self-doubt as well as moments of awe.
Which RL author(s) inspires you?
Well, obviously Rowling. How she created such a complex world and plot, matured the books along with the character, and made it all read “simply” is masterful.
I’ve always loved S.E. Hinton. I’d say, even today, that my favorite novel is “The Outsiders.”
I do love Tolkien and Austin. Unfortunately, no hot demigods watch me while I read her in the backyard.
Did any FF authors inspire you? What was it that had you reading FF and thinking "I could do this"?
Well, if anything, minisinoo intimidated the hell out of me.
But, the more Twific I read, the more I missed writing.
There are several fanfic authors that I admire.
Lady Gwynedd – her ability to make historical accuracy entertaining is unparalleled.
Golden Meadow – Amazing work ethic, prolific and versatile. I’ve never seen anyone effectively utilize such a huge vocabulary.
Jandco – Creative and entertaining. I couldn’t read her stuff fast enough.
feathersmmm – If it weren’t for her writing, I would never have had the guts to try posting humor.
Nilla – Handles sensitive subject matter with dignity
I’m forgetting some. There are some great 1 and 3 shot authors out there, too.
What advice would you give to an aspiring fanfic writer?
Write the first fic out before you ever post it. That may sound crazy, but when you aren’t getting many reviews at first, one critical one can derail you indefinitely.
I did not choose this pic I swear it was QFX
Write what you want. Feel good about it. Have a friend or friends read it. Tinker. Then, share it with the world.
Give us a Random Fact about yourself?
My family owned a Doughnut shop since the 1950s. I went to school smelling like a pastry all through school. The little fat boys loved me.
If you could have 15 minutes with anyone alive or dead real or fictional who would it be and what would you say to them?
Hardest question ever.
How about Aladdin’s genie and I ask for more time with more people?
JK Rowling & the conversation starts with “Make the check out to...”
Francis Ford Coppola & ask him why he didn’t release the full movie version of “The Outsiders” back in the day
William Shakespeare & ask him to prove if he was real or merely a penname for a collective of female writers
Robert Pattinson – not thinking I’ll say anything
Carlisle Cullen – ask him why he, as a medical professional with centuries of experience, failed to recommend a condom
Alan Rickman and Matthew MacFadyen – whatever they want to talk about. I just want to hear their voices.
What is your FanFic Pet peeve?
The word 'suckle'.
Nothing turns me off more.
What is your Fandom Pet peeve?
Pointlessly catty bitches.
I had all sorts of lovely things to say, but they all are lost now as I cackle over the cow picture!
Thank you for the support of my story
QFX
P.S. - Hot guy pic of Nick Ayler, who I mentioned I was picturing as E in an as yet unposted story. Not just random half-naked man. Not that there is anything wrong with that...
